During the filming stage of our preliminary task I learnt a lot of new skills. Firstly, how to use a camera which is obviously a vital skill and secondly, the different camera angles which are the basics to know.
Editing was harder to learn though as I had no prior knowledge on the software, but it was easy to use and pick up. What went particularly well was our teamwork. This was a necessity because we weren’t afraid to criticise each other when we needed to improve on the acting, filming (angles and different shot sizes) and editing. This worked in our favour as it made it a lot easier as a whole. Unfortunately, we missed out the 180 degree shot where we had to show a conversation and this was a shot we had to get in. This was disappointing because it meant we had to re-record this section, meaning it was in different clothes rather than before.
Luckily, it was only our preliminary task so we could learn from this mistake, but otherwise everything went according to plan. The most productive aspect of our group was the fact we got along really well and got straight into the project as we were all enthusiastic and keen to start filming. This also allowed us to be more creative about what we did, so we developed to given script to make it a lot more interesting. Each member contributed greatly so we could have the best result for our video. We all got the chance to film and then we each edited our own version of the piece. The least productive aspect of our group would have been the fact that we’re all good friends, so we did get a bit carried away with some shots and things. But luckily, we could see when we were going off task so we could prevent it from happening again.
Alongside the shots that did work, we did encounter a problem with our first shot; we decided we wanted a motion shot to create a range of different ones. This created a problem because we didn’t know how to do it as we didn’t have a dolly to film it on. We tried filming it free hand and walking with the camera, but this only created a very wobbly image so the idea came up that we should improvised and try filming with a wheelie chair- which consequently proved quite good and smooth for the piece.
Throughout this process I have learnt to fully read the instructions given to you, so I know now in the future before jumping straight to filming that I need to plan and write a script for the piece as a whole. This lesson will definitely be taken forward to my AS coursework production as its vital we get that piece perfect. On a whole, I was very pleased with the whole process, especially because it was my first time ever filming and editing anything, I think it went really well and I was really pleased with the end result.
We were very bold using some probably higher end skills with the editing, e.g. using a reverse shot in our piece, but this only made it more exciting to do and made the end production work better. My role was playing the ‘superhero’ but alongside this I did get quite a lot of time filming when I wasn’t on camera. This consisted of filming different shots and angles for the piece. Overall, I fully enjoyed the preliminary task and I can’t wait to start with the final coursework production piece.
